International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS), Newport, R.I.
The school occupies a waterfront block in downtown Newport consisting of the centerpiece Restoration Hall on axis, a renovated administrative Mill Building along the north boundary, a new state-of-the-art, technologically-optimized Academic Building to the south, a working wharf extending west into the harbor, and open space for parking mid-parcel off Thames Street. A conceptual master plan was conceived to complete the block with an infill building at the southeast corner and include parking underground and then classroom/administrative space above. A brick appendage was proposed at the west end of the Mill Building to take advantage of water views across the wharf and harbor. A panoramic rooftop terrace was proposed for Restoration Hall to accommodate school functions.
