John Proud House
The Point section of Newport is renowned for its abundance of colonial, pre~Revolutionary War houses sitting cheek to jowl on a self-contained grid of narrow one-way streets. It is a trip back in time, lovingly restored and kept as simple as can be by residents who like it that way. The John Proud House is part and parcel, and then some. The original residence was built in 1730, a simple clapboard structure in the vernacular of the neighborhood. The renovation retains its classic past, but places the house in the crosshairs of the 2st century with modern, minimalist amenities, an open plan, and an addition to the rear that opens onto a raised bluestone patio through contemporary metal windows and doors with copious Glass. Notably, the entire four-bedroom house was raised 18 inches for flood protection to accommodate its low-lying harborside locale.
