Ocean Lawn, Newport, R.I.
A nondescript 1970s-era house with sweeping views east to the Atlantic was in need of a comprehensive upgrade. Changes to the floorplan are designed to make the development of primary spaces more suited to the client’s lifestyle, which favors an open plan with easygoing, unconstrained circulation between common living areas. A new kitchen with partitions removed features a central island to accommodate both casual seating and food preparation. Private spaces are updated with larger windows to take advantage of the panoramic seascape. An outlying garage structure complements the house architecturally and connects through a covered breezeway. Additional space above the garage and on a third level of the main building allows for bunk rooms and additional bathrooms for grandchildren and extended family.
